geography

L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois is 565  m above sea level, ten kilometers west of Valdahon and about 16 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , to the west of the Valdahon plateau, on the southern edge of the Forêt du Gros-Bois forest .

The area of the 7.84 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is occupied by the Valdahon plateau, which is an average of 560 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land, partly also of forest. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the north, the plateau is bounded by the ridge of the Côte d'Anroz (here, at 681 m, the highest point of L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois is reached) and in the north-west by the height of Mont Bon (up to 650 m). Much of this ridge is wooded ( Forêt du Gros-Bois ). In the far north, the municipal area extends to the edge of the Saône basin.

Neighboring municipalities of L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois are Naisey-les-Granges in the north, Verrières-du-Grosbois and Étalans in the east, Charbonnières-les-Sapins in the south and Trépot and Mamirolle in the west.

history

L'Hôpital was created in the Middle Ages when a hospital was founded, which was transferred to Hospital Saint-Jacques in Besançon in 1453 . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois is a member of the Loue-Lison community .

With 598 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (322 people were counted in 1911), there has been significant population growth again since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area or in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N57 , which leads from Besançon to Pontarlier . Since the construction of the four-lane bypass road, the town center has been relieved of through traffic. Other road connections exist with Charbonnières-les-Sapins, Trépot and Naisey. L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois has a train station on the railway line from Besançon to Le Locle . Here was the connection of the now disused branch line to Ornans .
