former Montby Castle

Gondenans-Montby is a French municipality with 175 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Gondenans-Montby is located at 395  m , twelve kilometers north-northeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends on the gently undulating limestone plateau between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, on the western edge of the Grand Bois.

The area of the 11.78 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the Doubs and Ognon. The main part of the area is taken up by the arid high plateau, which is an average of 400 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. To the west, the municipality extends to the wooded heights of the Chamois , on which the highest elevation of Gondenans-Montby is reached at 494 m, and the Bois du Chardenoi . The eastern boundary runs on a ridge of the Grand Bois (up to 425 m). A hollow begins north of the village and opens up to the Uzelle valley. In this valley, which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Soye , there is one of the few surface flowing waters of the limestone plateau, but after a short distance it seeps back into the karst subsoil. The basin of Les Echarquenans beyond this valley cut also belongs to Gondenans-Montby.

The municipality consists of different districts:

  • Gondenans-Montby ( 395  m ) on the limestone plateau
  • Montby ( 440  m ) on the edge of a high plateau east of the Chamois
  • Les Echarquenans ( 330  m ) in a hollow on the edge of the Grands Bois
  • Moulin Brulé ( 325  m ) in the valley below Uzelle

Neighboring communities of Gondenans-Montby are Uzelle and Bournois in the north, Soye and Fontaine-lès-Clerval in the east, Viéthorey in the south and Fontenelle-Montby in the west.

history

The municipality of Gondenans-Montby was populated very early. Traces of human presence have been discovered from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages . Montby Castle was founded in the 12th century, which later became the center of a lordship. It was sacked in 1344, then rebuilt, looted in the 16th century and set on fire again in 1637 during the Thirty Years War . Together with Franche-Comté , Gondenans and Montby finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, parts of the castle were destroyed by Prussian artillery because French troops had holed up here. Gondenans, Montby and Les Echarquenans have made up the municipality of Gondenans-Montby since the French Revolution . Today Gondenans-Montby is part of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

Attractions

The Gondenans Chapel was built in the 19th century. Few ruins from the 16th century are still visible of the medieval Montby Castle. Today there is a farm at the castle site.

With 175 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Gondenans-Montby is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 346 people), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Gondenans-Montby was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. Fish farming is carried out at the Moulin Brulé. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Rougemont to Clerval . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around twelve kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Uzelle and Viéthorey.
