Nancray is a French commune with 1,260 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Nancray is located at 413 m , about twelve kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on the so-called first plateau in the Saône basin, south of the Jura ridge (Côte).
The area of the 16.48 km² large municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the wide first Jura plateau, which averages 410 m. It forms a wide basin with no above-ground drainage. Two small streams rise north of Nancray, but after a short stretch they drain away again at the foot of the Côte. In the area of Nancray, the plateau is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land. In the south, the communal soil extends into the extensive forest area Forêt de Chauley (up to 450 m), in the west into the Bois de Faule . To the north, the municipal area extends over the elongated, wooded ridge of the Côte du Mont (Jura ridge), which separates the plateau from the adjacent Doube valley. Here, at 561 m, the highest elevation of Nancray is reached.
The hamlet of Moulin Neuf ( 395 m ) on the plateau at the southern foot of the Côte du Mont belongs to Nancray . Neighboring municipalities of Nancray are Vaire with Vaire-Arcier in the north, Osse in the east, Bouclans and La Chevillotte in the south and Gennes in the west.
history
The municipality of Nancray was populated very early. Traces that suggest the presence of humans are known from the Neolithic , the Bronze and Iron Ages . There was probably a settlement here during the Gallo-Roman period.
Nancray is first mentioned in a document in 1104 under the name Nanchra . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the lordship of Montfaucon . In the Thirty Years' War it was severely affected. After the reconstruction it formed its own little lordship. Together with Franche-Comté , Nancray came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The single-nave Saint-Valère church was rebuilt in 1757 on the site of a medieval church. One of the special attractions of Nancray is the Musée de Plein Air des Maisons Comtoises, an open-air museum in which 24 farmhouses from the 18th century can be visited in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté.

With 1260 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Nancray is one of the smaller communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (553 people were still counted in 1886), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the early 1960s. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Nancray was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small-scale businesses, including a sawmill, mechanical workshops and other handicraft businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Sancey-le-Grand . Further road connections exist with Osse and La Chevillotte.
