Larnod is a French municipality with 773 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Larnod is located at 425  m , about seven kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in a panoramic position on a ridge on the western edge of the Jura , between the valleys of Doubs in the north and Loue in the south.

The area of the 4.05 km² municipal area covers a section of the western Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the height of Larnod, which from a geological and tectonic point of view belongs to the system of the Jura ridge. At 470 m, Larnod's highest point is reached here. Especially towards the west, the chain drops steeply towards the Doubstal at the Rocher de Valmy viewpoint ( 406  m ). A little valley opens to the south, and after a short walk the stream drains into the karst subsoil of the first Jura plateau. The community area stretches south with a narrow strip to the wooded heights of the Grand Bois ( 446  m ) on the edge of the Loue Valley.

Neighboring communities of Larnod are Avanne-Aveney and Beure in the north, Pugey in the east, Chenecey-Buillon in the south, and Busy and Rancenay in the west.

history

Located on a Roman traffic route between Besançon and Lyon, the municipality of Larnod was probably settled very early. The place name probably has very old roots and means something like mountain village (from the Indo-European word stems lar (village) and nor (mountain)). Since the Middle Ages, Larnod has been under the rule of Arguel and, after the castle was built in 1634, formed its own small rule under their suzerainty. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Ecclesiastically, Larnod was dependent on the neighboring town of Pugey until the archbishop gave the villagers permission to build their own chapel at the end of the 18th century.

Attractions

The Larnod Chapel was built in the early 19th century. On the Rocher de Valmy viewpoint above the Doubstal there is a monumental cross that commemorates the French resistance movement during the Second World War.

With 773 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Larnod is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 90 and 140 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Larnod was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around twelve kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Beure and Pugey.
