Château d'École

Ecole-Valentin is a French commune with 2,609 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

École-Valentin is located at 290  m , about five kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs (in the south) and Ognon (in the north), north of the Fort des Montboucons.

The area of the 3.22 km² municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau, which connects to the north of the Doubstal and lies at an average of 290 m. The unpopulated area is partly made up of arable land and meadows, partly of forest. The plateau is flanked in the south by the ridge of the Fort des Montboucons, on which the southern border runs. To the east, the municipal area extends into the Bois de la Laye forest and to the western foothills of the Grande Côte ridge , at which the highest elevation of École-Valentin is reached at 383 m. With the northern part of the municipality, École-Valentin extends into the headwaters of the Ruisseau des Moulins (tributary of the Ognon).

The double municipality consists of the localities École west of the main road N57 and Valentin east of it. Neighboring municipalities of École-Valentin are Miserey-Salines and Châtillon-le-Duc in the north, Besançon in the east and south and Pirey in the west.

history

École is first mentioned in 1326 under the name Escole . In the course of time the spelling changed via Acole (1331) and Escholle (1352) to the current name. Valentin is documented as Vallanin as early as 1120 . According to this, Valantin (1143), Valentino (1245) and, since 1355, Valentin are handed down. In the Middle Ages, the two villages were under the sovereignty of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , they finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. With effect from January 1, 1973, École and Valentin merged to form today's double congregation. Since then, École-Valentin has seen strong growth and development into the suburb of Besançon.

Attractions

The octagonal structure of the Saint-Georges church in École was built from 1892 to 1893 on the site of an earlier church. As a special feature, the choir is not oriented to the east as usual, but to the north. The building complex of the mission house, which successively served as a seminary, orphanage, seat of the Red Cross and as a private school, dates from 1816 and 1817. Next to it is the Château du Saint-Esprit, which was built from 1557 to 1559 and has a Renaissance facade.

With 2609 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), École-Valentin is one of the medium-sized communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 300 and 380 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the population has increased almost tenfold. Today the urban area of École-Valentin has grown together with the outlying quarters of Besançon.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, École-Valentin was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed along the main road and in the area of the motorway junction, which is around 70 hectares in size and also extends to the municipal areas of Miserey-Salines and Châtillon-le-Duc. Around 250 companies in the fields of industry, craft, trade and services have settled here. The important industries include the manufacture of medical and surgical equipment, parts for the watch industry, companies in the transport industry, civil engineering and construction, as well as various IT, accounting and cleaning companies. There are also numerous retail establishments, a large shopping center and a multiplex cinema.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N57 , which leads from Besançon to Vesoul. The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about two kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Miserey-Salines, Pirey and Châtillon-le-Duc.

Platforms and pedestrian walkway of the station (2014)

The municipality is crossed by the Besançon-Viotte-Vesoul railway line . Since September 3, 2013 there is a stop west of the RN 57. This has two 120 m long platforms. In addition, 150 parking spaces and a bicycle shed were built. A bus line serves the train station.
