Voillans is a French municipality with 208 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Voillans is located at 390  m , six kilometers northeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 34 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , in a hollow on the southern edge of the high plateau Les Mondrevaux.

The area of the 10.12 km² large municipal area includes a section on the edge of the extreme northwestern ridges of the Jura . The main part of the area is taken up by the gently undulating landscape of a high plateau, which averages 420 m. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The only surface flowing water is the Ruisseau de la Chenevière , which rises to the west of the village and drains away a few 100 meters east of it. The southern border runs on a predominantly wooded ridge that separates the plateau from the Doubstal. At 548 m, Voillans' highest point is reached here.

In addition to the actual village, Voillans also includes the hamlet of La Grange des Noyes ( 430  m ) on the plateau on the edge of the Bois de Reuge and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Voillans are Viéthorey in the north, Fontaine-lès-Clerval and L'Hôpital-Saint-Lieffroy in the east, Hyèvre-Paroisse and Baume-les-Dames in the south and Autechaux and Vergranne in the west.

history

Voillans is first mentioned in 1173 under the name Vaylans . The place name probably goes back to the Germanic personal name Walo . In the Middle Ages, Voillans was part of the Baume-les-Dames domain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. After that it was the location of a high court. In the 19th century iron ore was mined at Voillans, which was processed in Clerval. Today Voillans is part of the Doubs Baumois municipal association .

Attractions

The Notre-Dame de la Nativité church was rebuilt from 1767 to 1772, including the Gothic portal of the previous building. The château, a former mansion, dates from the 18th century.

With 208 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Voillans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (320 people were still counted in 1896), there has been a significant increase in population since the mid-1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Voillans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Autechaux to Clerval. The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about five kilometers away. Another road connection is with Viéthorey.
