Over time, the spelling changed via Vizia (1251), Vezia (1261) and La Vèse (1417) to today's name La Vèze, which is first recorded in 1547. The village has belonged to the city of Besançon since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. It was not until 1835 that La Vèze was separated from Besançon and made an independent municipality.

Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Besançon.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the RN 57 main road that connects Besançon with Pontarlier . The Besançon bypass will be opened soon, which will join the N57 at La Vèze. Further road connections exist with Montfaucon , Saône, Mérey-sous-Montrond and Fontain. The airport of Besançon-La Vèze is located southeast of La Vèze, mainly in the municipality of Saône.
