Look at Mesmay |
Mesmay is a French commune with a population of 71 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Mesmay is located at 275 m above sea level, south of Quingey , about 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on the western edge of a basin of the Loue between the heights of the Chataillon in the west and the Bois du Landet in the east.
The area of the 3.11 km² large municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The area is limited to the east by the Loue. Here it flows south through a wide basin, which is framed by the outermost mountain ranges of the Jura. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the flat floodplain to the adjacent, predominantly wooded ridges of the Chataillon and Bois du Peu . At 436 m, Mesmay's highest point is reached here. This ridge stretches south from Quingey to the breakthrough of the Loue at Rennes-sur-Loue.
Neighboring communities of Mesmay are Lombard in the north, Brères in the east, Chay in the south and Liesle in the west.
Attractions
The village church of Sainte-Madeleine in Mesmay was rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of a medieval chapel. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 71 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Mesmay is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (159 people were counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Mesmay was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) until well into the 20th century. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road N83 (Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier) via Brères. Another road connection is with Lombard.
