Avanne-Aveney is a French commune with 2,255 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Avanne-Aveney is located at 232  m , about six kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The double community extends on the western edge of the Jura , on both sides of the Doubs , at the foot of the Jura ridge and at the western foot of the hill of Fort de Planoise .

The Doubs at Avanne-Aveney

The area of ​​the 8.62 km² municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The central part of the area is occupied by the 500 to 1000 m wide, flat valley low of the Doubs. Here the river draws a loop that extends far to the west and is cut off by the Rhine-Rhône Canal . The Doubstal divides the furthest folds of the Jura: south of the river is the height of the Rocher de Valmy viewing rock ( 406  m ), north of the valley is the height of Fort de Planoise , at 493 m, the highest point of Avanne-Aveney is reached . The steep slopes are criss-crossed by ledges in various places. To the west and northwest, the community area extends into the adjoining slightly undulating landscape west of Besançon. The forest area of ​​the Bois Monsieur extends here .

The double community Avanne-Aveney consists of several districts:

  • Avanne ( 240  m ) on the right, northern side of the Doubs at the west foot of the height of Fort de Planoise
  • Aveney ( 250  m ) on the left, south side of the Doubs below the Rocher de Valmy
  • La Belle Étoile ( 290  m ) on the edge of the Bois Monsieur

Neighboring communities of Avanne-Aveney are Besançon in the north, Beure in the east, Larnod and Rancenay in the south and Montferrand-le-Château , Grandfontaine and Franois in the west.

history

The village of Avanne has been mentioned since the 11th century. The castle of Avanne, built in 1280, was the center of a lordship. She was with the invasion of King Louis XI. destroyed in the Franche-Comté in 1479. Together with Franche-Comté , Avanne and Aveney finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 1973 Aveney formed a parish associated with Avanne. In 2004, the final merger to form the twin municipality of Avanne-Aveney was completed.

With 2255 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Avanne-Aveney is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 440 and 550 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled.

The Saint-Vincent church in Avanne was built in 1830. Also in Avanne are the few remains of the medieval castle and the La Grâce-Dieu mill .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Avanne-Aveney was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In the past, viticulture was also very important. Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed north of Avanne and in the area of ​​La Belle-Étoile. Today, Avanne-Aveney has a feed factory and the transport industry is an important branch. There are also numerous retail establishments. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other municipalities of the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from the RN 273 , the Besançon bypass. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around nine kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Beure, Quingey , Rancenay and Grandfontaine.
