Châtillon-sur-Lison is a French commune with 9 inhabitants (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Châtillon-sur-Lison is located at 380  m , about 19 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement extends in the Jura , on a plateau around 100 m above the confluence of the Lison and the Loue , at the foot of the castle hill.

The area of the 2.89 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The area is limited to the east by the Lison and below its mouth by the Loue. These rivers move with a winding course in valleys that are cut about 100 m deep into the surrounding plateaus and the slopes of which are crisscrossed in some places by striking limestone walls. The Loue flows in a 500 m wide flat valley floor. The municipal area extends westward from the rivers to the adjacent plateau of Châtillon ( 370  m ), on which the castle hill ( 464  m ) sits as a witness mountain and forms the highest elevation of Châtillon-sur-Lison. In the far west, the area extends to the next higher layer level (up to 450 m).

The community consists of three hamlets:

  • Les Forges ( 290  m ) on the Loue
  • Les Granges ( 380  m ) on the Châtillon plateau
  • Le Château ( 464  m )

Neighboring municipalities of Châtillon-sur-Lison are Rurey and Lizine in the east, Cussey-sur-Lison in the south and Rouhe in the west.

history

A castle was founded in the 12th century in a strategically well-protected location on a witness mountain above the confluence of the Lison and the Loue. The castle belonged to the Châtillon and Chay-Vaugrenant families. In the middle of the 13th century, another mansion, the so-called Château-Dessous, was built, but in 1479 by troops of King Louis XI. was destroyed. In the Middle Ages, Châtillon formed a lordship that was under the sovereignty of the Lords of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Ownership of the castle passed from the Vaugrenant to the Mouret in 1767. After 1808 there were various changes of ownership; Among other things, the castle belonged to the owners of the iron works in the 19th century.

With 9 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Châtillon-sur-Lison is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (58 people were still counted in 1891), it has remained practically constant since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Châtillon-sur-Lison was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In the 19th century its importance increased thanks to the ironworks. At that time the village had more than 300 inhabitants. When the company ceased in the late 1870s, however, most of the workers and families moved away. Today the residents live mainly from the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Épeugney to Salins-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Rouhe and Lizine.
