geography

Le Moutherot is located at an altitude of 323  m above sea level, about 22 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends from a promising location on a knoll that towers above the surrounding area up to 100 m, in the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north.

The area of the 1.30 km² large municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The main part of the area is taken up by the summit of Le Moutherot, on which the highest point of the place is reached at 324 m. This hill represents one of the north-eastern foothills of the Massif de la Serre . On the hilltop there is arable and meadow land outside of the settlement area, while the slopes are predominantly forest-covered. In the north and east, the municipal area extends to the edge of the valley of the Ognon.

Neighboring communities of Le Moutherot are Jallerange and Courchapon in the north and Étrabonne in the south.

history

Together with Franche-Comté , Le Moutherot finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1972 the village was incorporated into Jallerange together with Courchapon, but Le Moutherot regained its independence in 1985. Today Le Moutherot is a member of the Val Marnaysien municipal association .

With 127 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Le Moutherot is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 82 people counted), strong population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s thanks to the attractive location. Since then, the population has increased almost fivefold.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Moutherot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns and in the agglomeration of Besançon.

The village is far away from the major thoroughfares and can be reached from Jallerange or Étrabonne. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away.
