geography

Municipal administration in the former schoolhouse

Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne is located 365  m above sea level, about 18 kilometers southwest of Ornans and 29 km south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley basin of the Lison surrounded by steep slopes , which is lined with striking rock walls and ledges, north of the Source du Lison .

The area of the 8.86 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Nans basin, the flat valley floor being approximately one kilometer in diameter. From south to north the basin is crossed by the Lison, which takes in several short side streams here. With a deeply incised Klustal valley , the Lison breaks through the heights of the Forêt de Fertans ( 610  m , in the west) and Montmahoux (up to 768 m, in the east) below Nans . In the southwest of the basin there is the narrow prominence of Bois Bovard (up to 670 m), in the south the height of Sainte-Anne ( 700  m ) and in the east of Mont Mahoux , on the slope of which at 770 m is the highest elevation of Nans-sous -Sainte-Anne is reached. The slopes are criss-crossed by distinctive limestone walls and projections and show caves and abrises in various places . Below a high rock face in an impressive rock basin about 1.5 km southeast of the village rises the Lison with a heavily pouring karst spring , which is one of the most visited natural attractions in Franche-Comté.

Neighboring municipalities of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne are Saraz and Éternoz in the north, Montmahoux in the east, Crouzet-Migette and Sainte-Anne in the south and Geraise , Salins-les-Bains and Saizenay in the west.

history

Village well and church

The municipality of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne was settled very early. Numerous remains from the Neolithic to Gallo-Roman times have been found in the Grotte du Père Mitoulet .

In the 12th century Nans appears for the first time in the documents. The place name originally comes from the Gallic language and means something like Bach (mostly in a deep valley). Since the Middle Ages, the village has belonged to the Lords of Chalon. The Montrichard family, vassals of the Lords of Chalon, built a castle in Nans in the 15th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The abundant hydropower has been used to operate mills since the Middle Ages . An iron hammer was founded in 1619 . Iron processing (making scythes and wheel spokes) soon gained regional importance. Today Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne is a member of the Loue-Lison municipal association .

Attractions

The karst spring of the Lison

The two-aisled church of Nans was built in the 15th century in the late Gothic style. The Château Mirabeau (originally from the 15th century) and numerous houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have also been preserved. The La taillanderie museum was set up in the buildings of the former blacksmith's workshop. The most important attraction of the place, however, is the karst spring of the Lison as well as the Creux Billard (around 80 m high waterfall) and the impressive rock face of the Sarrazine grotto in the immediate vicinity. They attract around 150,000 visitors a year.

With 156 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (366 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry as well as metal processing. The blacksmith's workshop was closed in 1969. Today there are some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

Thanks to the proximity of the Source du Lison and other places of interest, Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne now also benefits from tourism.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D492 department road, which leads from Salins-les-Bains to Ornans . There are other road links with Crouzet-Migette and Saraz.
