Bartherans Castle

Bartherans is a French commune with a population of 55 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bartherans is located at 455  m , about 23 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a plateau between the Lison valley in the east and the Bois du Fay in the west.

The area of ​​the 5.81 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the Bartherans plateau, which lies at an average of 450  m and consists mainly of meadows. The eastern border runs along the upper edge of the slope that leads to the valley of the Lison. To the west, the community area extends to the ridge of Bois de la Chau and Bois du Fay , which is oriented in a north-south direction. The highest point of Bartherans is reached here at 570  m .

Neighboring communities of Bartherans are Le Val with Montfort in the north, Échay and Myon in the east, Ivrey and By in the south and Ronchaux in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Bartherans belonged to the Montfort dominion; in the 17th century it came to the Mouret of Châtillon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Bartherans was built in the 19th century. The "Château", which belonged to the Mouret, dates from 1660.

With 55 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bartherans is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (141 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bartherans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Quingey to Éternoz . There are other road connections with Échay and By.
