Lavoir in Geneuille

Geneuille is a French commune with 1,331 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Geneuille is located at 220  m , about eleven kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the southern edge of the Ognon Valley opposite Bussières , in the gently undulating landscape in the far north-west of the Doubs department.

The area of the 6.45 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Ognon Valley. The northern border runs along the Ognon, which flows here with several turns through an approximately 1.5 km wide, flat valley depression. From the course of the river, the community area extends southwards over the wide, formerly boggy floodplain to the adjacent slightly undulating landscape. This consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. In the southwest are the extensive forest area of the Grand Bois and the fish pond Étang de Lanrêtre . In the far south the parish reaches to the foot of the height of Châtillon-le-Duc. Here the highest elevation of Geneuille is reached with 278 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Geneuille are Bussières in the north, Châtillon-le-Duc in the east, Les Auxons in the south and Cussey-sur-l'Ognon in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Geneuille formed its own rule, which was under the sovereignty of the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 19th century, the water power of the Ognon was used to operate a paper mill. Today Geneuille is part of the communauté d'agglomération du Grand Besançon .

With 1,331 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Geneuille is one of the smaller municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased slightly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 559 people), a marked increase in population has been recorded since the early 1970s. Since then, numerous single-family houses have been built on the outskirts and the population has quadrupled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Geneuille was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including those in the transport and wood processing industries. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Devecey to Émagny . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eight kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Auxon-Dessus , Bussières and Cussey-sur-l'Ognon.
