history

The municipality of Ruffey was settled very early. There are wall foundations of a Roman country estate. The place name Ruffey goes back to Ruffiacum (country estate of Ruffius). In the Middle Ages, Ruffey was the center of a rule that was under the sovereignty of the Dukes of Burgundy. Together with Franche-Comté , Ruffey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Ruffey was officially renamed Ruffey-le-Château in 1922. Today Ruffey-le-Château is a member of the Val Marnaysien municipal association .
