Pouilley-Français is a French municipality with 833 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Pouilley-Français is located at 251 m , about 14 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Besançon (beeline). The village extends north-east of Saint-Vit in a hollow in the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon (in the north).
The area of the 6.08 km² large municipal area includes a section north of the Doubstal. The landscape, partly with arable land and meadow, partly with forest, shows only minor differences in relief. The area is drained by the Dorfbach and the Ringeard , along which the eastern border runs, south to the Doubs. To the north, the municipal area extends over a plateau that forms the watershed between the Doubs and Ognon. At 300 m, the highest point in Pouilley-Français is reached on the hill northwest of the village.
Neighboring communities of Pouilley-Français are Corcondray and Villers-Buzon in the north, Dannemarie-sur-Crète in the east and Saint-Vit in the south and west.
history
Pouilley-Français is first mentioned in 1226 under the name Poylley-Françoys . Over time, the spelling changed via Poillefrançois (1285), Poilley-François (1584) and Pouley-François (1614) to the current name. In the Middle Ages, Pouilley-Français belonged to the Cathedral Chapter of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of the Birth of Mary in Pouilley-Français was built in the 18th century. Various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved in the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Pouilley-Français was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now a few local small-scale businesses, especially in the precision engineering and transport industries. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from the main road N73, which runs from Besançon to Dole . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is approximately eleven kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Ferrières-les-Bois, Dannemarie-sur-Crète and Villers-Buzon.
