Palise is a French municipality with 141 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Palise is 228 m , about 16 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends slightly higher on the southern edge of the valley low of the Ognon in the extreme north-west of the Doubs department.
The area of the 2.09 km² municipal area includes a section of the Ognon Valley. The western and northern borders run along the Ognon, which flows here with several windings through a flat valley low about one kilometer wide. From the course of the river, the community area extends south over the formerly boggy floodplain to the adjacent high terrace , which consists of ice-age river deposits. It is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land. The Bois des Grésaillères forest is located on a hill in the south . The highest elevation of Palise is reached here at 266 m.
Neighboring communities of Palise are Aulx-lès-Cromary in the north and east, Venise and Vieilley in the south and Cromary in the west.
history
Finds of graves from the Merovingian period (6th and 9th centuries) indicate that the municipality of Palise was inhabited very early. In the Middle Ages, Palise formed a Kastlanei, which was under the rule of Châtillon-le-Duc . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Palise is part of the Grand Besançon municipal association .

With 141 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Palise is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 51 people counted), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Palise was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The village can be reached either from Moncey or from Vieilley or Cromary. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eleven kilometers away.
