Mairie Chalèze

Chalèze is a French municipality with 370 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chalèze is located at 250  m , about six kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on the left southern side of the river, on the northwestern edge of the Jura , at the northern foot of the Jura border chain (Côte).

The area of the 5.68 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The Doubs flows with several bends through the 2 km wide, flat valley depression and is accompanied by the Rhine-Rhône Canal . It usually forms the northern or western border; only a small portion of the parish ban is across the river. To the south, the community area extends over the flat valley floor and the adjacent wooded steep slope, which is traversed by limestone bands in several places, up to the ridge of the Jura ridge. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this forms an anticline of the Jura folds. At the height covered by the Bois des Epesses , the highest point in Chalèze is reached at 552 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Chalèze are Thise and Roche-lez-Beaupré in the north, Vaire with Vaire-Arcier in the east, Gennes and Montfaucon in the south and Chalezeule in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chalèze belonged to the Montfaucon dominion. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Because of its proximity to the Doubs, the village was often affected by flooding.

Attractions

The Notre-Dame de la Nativité church was rebuilt from 1725 to 1730 on the site of a medieval church. The current bell tower dates from 1838.

With 370 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Chalèze is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 160 and 200 people, there was significant population growth in the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, the population has remained at a constant level.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chalèze was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a carpenter's shop and a company that makes canoes and kayaks. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

Although the village is away from the larger thoroughfares, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from the main road N83 , which runs from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eleven kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Vaire-Arcier and Montfaucon.
