Mairie and Lavoir

Château Vieux-les-Fosses is a French commune with a population of 13 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Châteauvieux-les-Fossés is 449  m above sea level, six kilometers southeast of Ornans and about 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a ledge west of the Loue , around 100 m above the valley floor above Vuillafans.

The area of the 4.46 km² municipal area includes a strongly reliefed section of the French Jura. The area includes the erosion valleys of Vergetolle and Raffenot , cut deep into the Amancey plateau , which join at Châteauvieux-les-Fossés and shortly afterwards open towards the Loue valley. The steep slopes are criss-crossed by various ledges of rock and topped with a tough layer of limestone on the upper edge of rock walls and protrusions. The municipal boundary mostly runs on the edge of the plateaus above this ledge. The headland of Châteauvieux increases towards the southeast up to the height of Champ Roy , at which the highest point in the municipality is reached at 721 m.

Neighboring communities of Châteauvieux-les-Fossés are Montgesoye in the north, Vuillafans in the east, Longeville in the south and Chantrans in the west.

history

The medieval castle Châteauvieux was built in the 11th century by the lords of Montgesoye and made the new center of their rule. Under the Lords of Salins, Châteauvieux became an important dominion in the Loue Valley, which controlled the salt road from Besançon to Pontarlier and was often involved in disputes with the opposite Châteauneuf (municipality of Vuillafans). In the course of time, the small castle town of the same name developed next to the castle. Together with Franche-Comté , Vuillafans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The castle came into state ownership with the French Revolution and fell victim to a fire in 1807. In order to avoid confusion with municipalities of the same name, Châteauvieux was officially renamed Châteauvieux-les-Fossés in 1923. Today, Châteauvieux-les-Fossés is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Ornans, comprising 24 localities .

Attractions

Originally from the 11th century, Châteauvieux was remodeled in the 17th century and the fortifications were strengthened. Today the Châteauvieux, which was rebuilt after the fire in the 19th century, is privately owned. The Sainte-Anne chapel was built in 1770.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Châteauvieux-les-Fossés was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the D67 departmental road that leads from Ornans to Pontarlier . Another road connection is with Longeville.
