Ronchaux is a French commune with a population of 87 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Ronchaux is located at 320  m , south of Quingey , about 24 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Besançon (beeline). The village extends in the western Jura , in the basin of the Bief de Caille and east of the Loue at the foot of the Bois du Fay .

The area of the 5.24 km² municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by a plateau-like hill at the foot of the Bois du Fay. This hill descends towards the west to the wide basin of the Loue, which is framed by the extreme ridges of the Jura. The basin of the Bief de Caille stream , which rises southeast of the village in the Source de la Mittonière and in sections forms the northern border, is slightly sunk into this plateau . To the east, the community area extends over a steep slope on the wooded ridges of Bois du Fay and Bois de la Chau . This ridge belongs to a Jura chain that stretches north from Mont Poupet to the bend of the Loue river. Here, at 593 m, the highest elevation in Ronchaux is reached.

Neighboring communities of Ronchaux are Le Val with Montfort in the north, Bartherans in the east, By in the south and Paroy and Samson in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Ronchaux was part of the Montfort domain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 87 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Ronchaux is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased overall in the first half of the 20th century (130 people were still counted in 1901), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ronchaux was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N83 , which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . There are other road connections with Paroy and Montfort.
