geography

location

Les Auxons is located at 247  m , about eight kilometers northwest of the prefecture Besançon and 70 kilometers east of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies).

Neighboring municipalities of Les Auxons are Cussey-sur-l'Ognon and Geneuille in the north, Châtillon-le-Duc in the east, Miserey-Salines , Pouilley-les-Vignes and Pelousey in the south and Moncley and Sauvagney (point of contact) in the west.

topography

The area of the 10.16 km 2 municipal area extends in the fertile plain of Franche-Comté north of the French Jura Mountains , the last foothills of which form some elevations on the southern edge of the municipality. Most of the municipality is drained from the Ruisseau d'Auxon northwards to the Ognon . The district of Auxon-Dessous is located on the valley floor of the Ruisseau d'Auxon while Auxon-Dessus is located on an area about 20 m higher northeast of the creek.

history

The area of Les Auxons was already settled in Roman times and was crossed by the road link from Besançon to Langres . During excavations and road construction work in the 20th century, building floor plans, accumulations of rubble from destroyed Roman buildings and a meter-thick layer of rubble came to light in various places.

Auxon lingerie

In the High Middle Ages , Ausona or Alsona was first mentioned in 1098 . Over time, their spelling changed from Asson Villa (1244), Osson (1311) and Auxon-la-ville to Auxon Dessous . The local residents were called les Mounas in French . The functioning of a water mill has been handed down from the year 1275 and the period 1552–1882. A catastrophic village fire destroyed the settlement on April 4, 1700, leaving only four houses and parts of the church and castle.

Auxon-Dessus

In the case of Auxon-Dessus, the first name was Ausonio both in Roman times and in the High Middle Ages when the Saint-Pierre church was built in 1133. Over time, the spelling changed from Ausson le Chemin (around 1300) and Auxon to Auxon Dessous . Its local residents were called les Ch'nillons in French . During the Franco-Prussian War , a slaughter between the Baden cavalry and the Bourbaki army took place near Ausson-Dessus, with 109 dead and 382 injured. In the same century, a village school was built in 1856 and the station on the Besançon-Viotte-Vesoul railway line opened in 1876 . It was demolished to make way for the TGV branch line to Besançon, which opened in 2011 . The Montagney – Miserey branch line, opened in 1878 and abandoned in 1964, circled the two districts of Les Auxons on their southern and western edges.

On the initiative of their two municipal councils, Auxon-Dessus and Auxon-Dessus merged on January 1st, 2015 to form the new municipality of Les Auxons with the main town in Auxon-Dessus. The locals of Les Auxons are called les Auxois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

The two villages were dominated by agriculture well into the 20th century . In addition to some of the remaining farms, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has mainly developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in Besançon and the surrounding area.

The village is not far from the N57 between Vesoul and Besançon, from which a junction leads to the two districts of Auxon-Dessus and -Lessous. The next motorway connection to the A36 is around 5 km away. In the north of the municipality, the Besançon Franche-Comté TGV train station is on the LGV Rhin-Rhône high-speed line .
