Auxon-Dessous is a village and a commune déléguée in the French commune of Les Auxons with 1,385 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .
geography
Auxon-Dessous is located at 230 m , about 9 km northwest of the prefecture Besançon and 69 km east of the city of Dijon (beeline). The area of 6.28 km 2 of the former municipality includes both sides of a small valley that is drained by the Ruisseau d'Auxon brook to the north in the Ognon . Outside the built-up settlement (17%), the communal land is used for agriculture (39%) and is covered by forests in the north and west (40%).
history
The area of Auxon-Dessous was already settled in Roman times: ruins and debris from destroyed Roman buildings came to light in four different places. In the High Middle Ages , the village was first mentioned in 1098 as Ausona or Alsona .
With effect from January 1, 2015, the municipalities of Auxon -Dessus and Auxon-Dessus were merged to form the Commune nouvelle called Les Auxons . The administrative seat is in Auxon-Dessus. The municipality of Auxon-Dessous belonged to the arrondissement Besançon and the canton Besançon-3 .

Before the municipal merger , Auxon-Dessous had the code INSEE 25034 and last had 1337 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). This made it one of the smaller communities in the Doubs department. Its population sank slowly from around 300 to 157 in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, and it was only since the last quarter of the 20th century that a strong and sustained increase in population was recorded due to its proximity to the Besançon agglomeration.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Auxon-Dessous was a village dominated by agriculture , in which several farms with a focus on milk production are still active today. In the meantime, the village has developed into a residential community whose employees go about their work as commuters in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Besançon area.
The village is not far from the N57 between Vesoul and Besançon, from which a junction leads to the two districts of Auxon-Dessus and -Lessous. The next motorway connection to the A36 is around 5 km away. The high-speed LGV Rhin-Rhône line runs through Auxon-Dessous with the Besançon Franche-Comté TGV station in the other half of the town.
