geography

Val-de-Roulans is 400  m , seven kilometers west of Baume-les-Dames and about 23 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies ). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , on a plateau southeast of Mont Bichoux.

The area of the 2.99 km² large municipal area includes a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The central part of the area is occupied by a plateau that is on average 400 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. To the north this plateau descends to the headwaters of the Ruisseau de la Beule , to the south a gently sloping, wooded slope ( Bois du Chanoi , Gros Buisson ) leads over to the Pouligney basin. In the northwest, the municipal area extends to the foot of Mont Bichoux , in the east to the forest heights of the Bois du Grand Val . The highest point of Val-de-Roulans is reached here at 423 m. • Le Val de Dessus ( 400  m ) on the plateau on the western edge of the Bois du Grand Val

Neighboring municipalities of Val-de-Roulans are La Bretenière in the north, Baume-les-Dames in the east, Breconchaux and L'Écouvotte in the south and Le Puy and Villers-Grélot in the west.

After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1968 only 41 people were counted), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has increased almost fivefold.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Val-de-Roulans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Breconchaux to La Bretenière. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eleven kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Villers-Grélot.
