Sauvagney is a French municipality with 185 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Sauvagney is located at 208 m , about 13 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the south-eastern edge of the Ognon valley, in the gently undulating landscape in the extreme north-west of the Doubs department.
The area of the 3.95 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Ognon Valley. The western and northern borders run along the Ognon, which flows here with several windings through a flat valley low about one kilometer wide. From the course of the river, the community area extends southeast over the valley floodplain to the adjacent gently undulating landscape. This consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. In the south there is the extensive forest area of the Bois du Petit Bugnoz . The highest point of Sauvagney is reached at 251 m on a knoll in this forest.
The neighboring communities of Sauvagney are Chambornay-lès-Pin in the north, Cussey-sur-l'Ognon in the east, Les Auxons and Moncley in the south and Vregille in the west.
history
In the late Middle Ages (16th century) Sauvagney formed its own small dominion. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
Sauvagney village church was built in 1770 in the shape of a Latin cross. It has two side chapels, a richly carved pulpit that was transferred from the Chapelle du Refuge in Besançon, and a statue of the Madonna from the 16th century. The bell tower was added in 1821. In the village there are three former mansions from the 17th to 19th centuries.

With 185 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Sauvagney is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 80 and 120 people, a slight population growth has been recorded since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Sauvagney was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Moncley to Chambornay-lès-Pin. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away.
