Montussaint is a French commune with a population of 58 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montussaint is located at 282  m , eleven kilometers northwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a plateau that slopes gently towards the west to the valley of the Ognon , in the undulating landscape in the extreme northwest of the Doubs department at the west foot of the Bois du Chanoi.

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​3.04 km² comprises a section of the hilly landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon. The western part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is an average of 280 m. It is partly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows larger forest areas, namely the Bois de la Buhière in the north-west. To the east, the community area extends over a densely wooded slope up to the height of the Bois du Chanoi, on which the highest point of Montussaint is reached at 399 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Montussaint are Montbozon in the north, Mondon , Puessans and Rognon in the east, Tallans in the south and Avilley in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Montussaint belonged to the dominion of Montbozon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

Nativité de Saint-Jean-Baptiste church

The single-nave church de la Nativité de Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in 1684. There are three stone crosses in front of the church. In the town center there is a well from the 18th century.

With 58 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montussaint is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (146 people were still counted in 1896), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montussaint was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Rougemont . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Montbozon and Tallans.
