history

The name Montbozon probably dates back to around 800 and goes back to Count Bozon, a grandson of Charlemagne . A noble family from Montbozon has been documented since the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, Montbozon belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The place was a fortified patch that controlled a passage over the Ognon. Montbozon was the center of a Kastlanei and provost, which in the 18th century comprised 72 villages. The Dominican Hospital was founded in 1450. Together with Franche-Comté , Montbozon finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2000, Montbozon has been the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, comprising 21 localities .

The remarkable church furnishings include the richly carved choir stalls (16th century), the main altar (18th century) and various grave slabs.

Various buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries in the traditional Haute-Saône style have been preserved in the town center.

The Fontaine du Cygne was built in 1828 and is now classified as a Monument historique . The fountain with the sculpture of a swan is semicircular and is located in a portico .
