Villers-Pater is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Villers-Pater is located at an altitude of 260 m above sea level, about 17 kilometers south of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends north of the river valley of the Ognon , on the eastern edge of the valley low of the Ruisseau d'Authoison , between the forest heights of Bois Lajus in the west and Bois de Villers-Pater in the east.

The area of 4.67 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The area is crossed by the valley of the Ruisseau d'Authoison , which provides drainage to the south to the Quenoche. The flat valley low with fertile alluvial soils is about 500 meters wide and averages 260 m. The side valley of Argirey flows north of the village from the left. The valley of the Ruisseau d'Authoison is flanked on both sides by wooded hills, which mostly reach heights of 300 to 360 m. They mostly consist of limestone layers from the upper Jurassic period . The Bois Lajus forest extends to the west of the valley . To the east, the parish area extends into the forests of the Bois de Villers-Pater . Here, at 372 m, Villers-Pater's highest point is reached.

The court settlement Argirey (275 m) in a side valley of the Ruisseau d'Authoison belongs to Villers-Pater . Villers-Pater's neighboring parishes are Authoison and Vy-lès-Filain in the north, Roche-sur-Linotte-et-Sorans-les-Cordiers and Loulans-Verchamp in the east, Beaumotte-Aubertans in the south and Ruhans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Villers-Pater belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . It formed its own small lordship that was subordinate to the Saint-Vincent monastery in Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , Villers-Pater finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area was changed in 1832 when the hamlet of Argirey, previously an independent parish, was merged with Villers-Pater. Since 2000 Villers-Pater has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, which comprises 21 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Villers-Pater dates from the 18th century and has a richly carved pulpit. Only a few remains and moats have survived from the former medieval castle. The château was built in the 19th century.

With 51 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Villers-Pater is one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (96 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Villers-Pater was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are very few jobs in the village. In the meantime, the place has also turned into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Beaumotte to Authoison. Another road connection is with Loulans-Verchamp.
