geography

Framont lies at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, 15 kilometers north of Gray and about 50 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the plateau landscape northwest of the Saône valley , on the northern edge of the Salon .

The area of the 11.73 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the Saône valley. From northwest to southeast the area is crossed by the valley low of the Salon, which creates numerous meanders and provides drainage to the Saône. The flood plain averages 210 m and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau that reaches an average height of 250 m. This plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . The plateau is divided by various troughs that open to the valley of the salon. Agricultural use predominates in the valley and on the plateau, but there are also larger areas of forest. In the north, the municipality extends to the extensive forest area of the Bois de Groslières . At 264 m, Framont's highest point is reached here. To the south, the area extends to the heights of the Bois d'Écot and the Bois de Ramey (259 m).

The municipality consists of the following districts:

  • Frânois (215 m) in the valley of the Salon
  • Mont-le-Frânois (230 m) on the edge of the plateau, north of the Salon valley
  • Le Crochot (212 m), hamlet on the south bank of the Salon

Framont's neighboring municipalities are Courtesoult-et-Gatey in the north, Achey in the east, Montot , Oyrières and Écuelle in the south and Champlitte in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman traffic route as well as coin and ceramic finds indicate an early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Fouvent had ruled Frânois locally from the 12th century. Mont-le-Frânois, however, was subordinate to the Lords of Dampierre, who donated part of the area to the Theuley monastery. Later the villages belonged to the lords of Vergy and in 1555 came under the rule of Champlitte. Mont-le-Frânois was sacked and sacked in 1569 by troops of the Duke of Zweibrücken. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1972 Frânois (1968: 122 inhabitants) and Mont-le-Frânois (1968: 114 inhabitants) merged to form the municipality of Framont. Today Framont is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

The church of Frânois was built in the 18th century and has a main altar in neo-Gothic style from 1860 as well as various statues and paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. To the east of the village is the Oratoire à la Vierge from 1736. In Mont-le-Frânois there is the neo-Gothic church from the 19th century, which houses a statue of the Madonna from the 15th century. The Saint-Pierre chapel (18th century) and various wayside crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries are also worth mentioning.

Of the secular structures, the houses in Mont-le-Frânois are noteworthy, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône of the 17th and 18th centuries. A small castle was built on the site of the former manor house in the 18th century. Two stone bridges dating from the 18th century lead over the salon. There is also a 19th century lavoir near the salon, which was once used as a wash house and cattle trough. It was restored from 1994 to 1995.

With 194 inhabitants (2004), Framont is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (512 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Framont was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The salon's hydropower was used to operate several mills and a forge. Today there are some local small businesses, mainly in the wood processing and transport industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Dampierre-sur-Salon to Champlitte. Further road connections exist with Gatey, Oyrières and Écuelle.
