Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte is located at an altitude of 211 m above sea level, nine kilometers northwest of Gray and about 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, west of the Saône valley , in the valley low of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes.

The area of the 14.43 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the plain of Gray. From north to south, the area is crossed by the lowland of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes , which provides drainage to the Saône. At Auvet, the stream flows around the Mont d'Auvet (232 m) in an arch . The floodplain is relatively narrow in the upper part, a maximum of one kilometer wide in the lower part and used to be a moorland. The stream feeds several fish ponds.

The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which averages 240 m. It is divided by various troughs that open towards the Ruisseau des Écoulottes , in particular the Combe Rabeute and the Combe Chauvirey . Only a few of these side valleys show an above-ground running water. The plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and the Tertiary . Large parts of the plateau are used for agriculture, but there are also larger forest areas, including the Bois du Courtot and Bois du Pontot in the east and the Grand Bois in the south. To the west of the village is the Champ Maréchal plateau . The highest elevation of Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte is reached here at 261 m.

The community consists of several districts:

  • Auvet (211 m) in the valley of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes
  • Bley (208 m) on the Ruisseau des Écoulottes
  • La Chapelotte (205 m) on the southern edge of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes

Neighboring municipalities of Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte are Vars and Oyrières in the north, Chargey-lès-Gray in the east, Bouhans-et-Feurg and Autrey-lès-Gray in the south and Fahy-lès-Autrey in the west.

history

There was probably a fortified settlement site on Mont d'Auvet as early as the 4th century. A first early Christian church was destroyed in the 9th or 10th century. In the Middle Ages, Auvet was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The monks of the nearby monastery Theuley took care of the development of the place since the 12th century. They founded a grangie , a foundry (documented in 1455) and built several fish ponds. Together with Franche-Comté , Auvet finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1805 when the previously independent municipality of La Chapelotte (1800: 85 inhabitants) merged with Auvet to form Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte. Since the beginning of 2008, Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Auvet was rebuilt in the 19th century and includes statues from the 17th century. Remains of a Carolingian basilica are on the Mont d'Auvet. Other sights include the former manor Château d'Auvet and a lavoir from 1820, the roof of which is supported by 10 columns.

With 267 inhabitants (2005) Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 425 people counted), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The hydropower of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes was used to run mills, and there was a foundry in Bley. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go about their work in the larger towns in the area and in the Gray area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Autrey-lès-Gray to Écuelle. Other road connections exist with Chargey-lès-Gray and Fahy-lès-Autrey.
