geography
La Vernotte is located at an altitude of 249 m above sea level, five kilometers south of Fresne-Saint-Mamès and about 33 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the Saône basin , on the plateau that adjoins the Saône lowlands to the southeast, on the eastern edge of the Bois de Saint-Gand.
The area of the municipal area of 5.53 km² covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The main part of the area is taken up by a plateau, which averages 240 m. Geologically, the plateau belongs to the Saône basin and is made up of tertiary deposits. It is partly used for agriculture, but also shows larger forest areas. In the southwest, the municipality extends into the Bois de Saint-Gand . At 262 m, the highest point of La Vernotte is reached on a hill at the Les Gilles farmstead. In the east, the plateau is bordered by the Jouanne lowland and in the north by that of its side stream Ruisseau des Ecornes . These provide drainage to the north to the Romaine .
In addition to the actual village, La Vernotte includes several hamlets and farms:
- Sept-Fontaines (215 m) in the Jouanne valley
- Les Cordes (235 m) on the plateau southeast of the village
Neighboring municipalities of La Vernotte are Greucourt and Vezet in the north, Les Bâties in the east, Frasne-le-Château and Étrelles-et-la-Montbleuse in the south and Saint-Gand in the west.
history
The municipality of La Vernotte was settled very early, which was proven by the remains of a prehistoric settlement near Les Gilles. In the Middle Ages, the area of La Vernotte belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The local rule was held by the Lords of Oiselay. In 1807 the municipality, then named after the hamlet of Sept-Fontaines, was merged with Saint-Gand. Sept-Fontaines was separated again in 1824 and has since formed an independent municipality again. In 1898 the parish was renamed La Vernotte. Since 2007, La Vernotte has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 localities . The village does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish of Saint-Gand.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, La Vernotte was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a local road that leads from Saint-Gand to Les Bâties. Another road connection is with Greucourt.
