Vitrey-sur-Mance is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comte , in the canton of Jussey and in the district of Vesoul .
geography
Vitrey-sur-Mance is at an altitude of 255 m above sea level, ten kilometers west of Jussey and about 36 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme north-west of the department, in a valley south of the valley of the Mance , in the eastern foothills of the plateau of Langres.
The area of the 13.48 km² municipal area covers a section of the Langres plateau west of the upper Saône valley . The northern border mostly runs along the Mance, which flows to the east through a 1.5 km wide alluvial lowland . The floodplain lies at an average of 225 m and is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the community area extends southward over the floodplain and a 60 to 100 m high, mostly wooded slope ( Bois du Chanois ) to the adjacent high plateau, which reaches an average height of 280 m. The slope is subdivided by several hollows that open to the Mance valley, including that of Vitrey and the valley of the Ruisseau de la Perche .
The Vitrey plateau is around two kilometers wide and is bordered in the south by the Ougeotte valley . However, the municipal soil does not extend to the Ougeotte, but only to its northern side streams Ruisseau du Moivre and Ruisseau le Saupiquet . To the west, the high plateau, consisting of arable and meadow land, rises slightly and reaches the highest point of Vitrey-sur-Mance at 349 m above the Bois du Chânois. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the plateau consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic).
Neighboring municipalities of Vitrey-sur-Mance are Pisseloup , Betoncourt-sur-Mance and Vernois-sur-Mance in the north, Rosières-sur-Mance , Saint-Marcel and Montigny-lès-Cherlieu in the east, Chauvirey-le-Châtel in the south as well Ouge and Velles to the west.
history
The municipality of Vitrey was settled very early. There was a Gallo-Roman camp site in the Biémont corridor, which was destroyed in the 4th century. During excavations, wall foundations, ceramic and brick fragments, coins and pieces of jewelry were found. The Roman traffic route from the Upper Rhine to Langres ran nearby.
In the Middle Ages Vitrey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the Lords of Chauvirey, which is why Vitrey largely shared the fate of this rule. In 1577 the residents were granted certain freedoms. The Order of St. John also had property in the area with Aubigney. Together with Franche-Comté , Vitrey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Vitrey was renamed Vitrey-sur-Mance in 1962. Today the place is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen, which comprises 17 villages .
Attractions
The Saint-Laurent church was built in the 16th century and enlarged in the 18th century; the imperial style bell tower dates from the 19th century. The church has valuable furnishings , including the main altar, a richly carved pulpit and side altars from the 18th century and various statues.
The manor of Vitrey was built in 1521 by the Lords of Chauvirey. The former market hall on the village square has been converted into a shopping center. Vitrey-sur-Mance is home to a small museum with a collection of postcards and an exhibition on agriculture and industry in the region.

With 277 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vitrey-sur-Mance is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously (in 1881 there were still 943 people). After a phase of stagnation, the decline has increased again since 2000.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Vitrey-sur-Mance was mainly characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small-scale businesses, including two construction firms and an IT company. In the last few decades the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Jussey to Fayl-Billot . Further road connections exist with Chauvirey-le-Châtel, Betoncourt-sur-Mance, Vernois-sur-Mance and Montigny-lès-Cherlieu. The railway line from Vesoul to Langres, opened in 1858, runs through the municipality . The next major train station is at Jussey.
