The area of the 18.43 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the Saône valley. This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . The plateau is subdivided by various hollows that open to the Gourgeonne valley. Agricultural use is predominant in the valley and on the plateau. There are larger forest areas in the area of the municipal boundaries. • Vauconcourt (225 m) in the Gourgeonne valley
  • Nervezain (228 m) on the eastern side of the Gourgeonne valley

history

Vauconcourt is first mentioned in a document in 1108 as Wascum curtis . Later the names Vasconcort (1156), Wasuncurt (1172), Wascuncort (1175) and Vasoncourt (1275) followed. The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Wasco and the old French word cortem (court). In the Middle Ages, Vauconcourt and Nervezain belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The sovereignty of the area was initially held by the Lords of Fouvent , who in 1207 left part of the property to the Cherlieu monastery , then the Vergy family. The local noble family called Vauconcourt is documented from the 12th to the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Vauconcourt and Nervezain finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1970 when Vauconcourt and Nervezain (1968: 22 inhabitants) merged to form a double community. Today Vauconcourt-Nervezain is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 villages .

The village church of Vauconcourt originally dates from the 13th century, but was changed several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. A cross in the cemetery is dated 1611. Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vauconcourt-Nervezain was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. From 1685 to 1860 Vauconcourt was the location of a forge. The water power of the Gourgeonne was used to operate a mill. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D70 road from Gray to Combeaufontaine . Other road connections exist with Fleurey-lès-Lavoncourt, La Roche-Morey, Cornot, Confracourt, Vy-lès-Rupt and Grandecourt.
