Vilory is a French commune in the department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vilory is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, about 13 km north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the northwest of the basin of Saulx , on a slope sloping slightly to the southeast above the valley of the Ruisseau de Bâtard .
The area of the 4.15 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the Saulx basin. The southern part of the area is occupied by the basin of the Ruisseau de Bâtard , which provides drainage to the southeast to the Durgeon . The gently sloping slope of Vilory, which is mainly used for agriculture, connects to the north of the valley basin. The community area extends further north into the forests of the Bois de Vellefrie and the Bois de Vilory . At 395 m, the highest point in Vilory is reached on the Homme Dessus forest height . From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). In some places, shell limestone from the Middle Triassic also emerges.
Neurey-en-Vaux in the north, La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize in the east, Vellefrie in the south and Varogne in the west are neighboring municipalities of Vilory .
history
Remains of a Roman traffic route that led from Luxeuil to Langres point to an early inspection of the area. In the Middle Ages, Vilory belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Villeneuve held local rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1714 the residents were granted certain freedoms.
Attractions
The Mairie (town hall) is equipped with a small bell tower. Vilory has a covered lavoir from the 19th century that was once used as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 65 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vilory is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (125 people were counted in 1911), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Vilory is still a predominantly agricultural (arable, fruit and cattle breeding) and forestry village. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The place is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Varogne to Mailleroncourt-Charette . Other road connections exist with Neurey-en-Vaux and La Villeneuve.
