Montcey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montcey is located at an altitude of 327 m above sea level, about seven kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on a high plateau east of the Vesoul basin, between the valleys of Durgeon in the north and Colombine in the south.

The area of the 8.12 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of the hill country between the basin of Vesoul and the plain of Lure. The main part of the area is occupied by the Montcey plateau, which is an average of 330 m. It shows a loose structure of arable and meadow land as well as forest areas. To the north the plateau drops steeply to the valley of the Durgeon; the border runs above the steep slope. There are larger forest areas along the municipal boundaries: in the west of the Grand Bois de Comberjon (up to 330 m), in the south of the Bois de la Craye and in the east of the Bois du Mont Aubry (363 m). With a narrow strip, the community area extends northeast to the top of the Côte Rouge . The highest point in Montcey is reached here at 400 m. The high plateau consists of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period . There is no above-ground running water on the entire area because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Various karst phenomena can be found for this, including the Grotto des Équevillons .

Neighboring municipalities of Montcey are Colombier and Saulx in the north, Calmoutier in the east, Colombe-lès-Vesoul and Frotey-lès-Vesoul in the south and Comberjon in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Montcey was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The lords of Montaigu held local rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Montcey is a member of the 19 localities community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Juste was built in the 18th century. At the northern exit of the town there is a chapel in the neo-Gothic style. It was built in 1875 for a statue of the Blessed Virgin, which was erected in 1854 as thanks for being spared the cholera epidemic that hit the region in the mid-19th century. In the center there is a house from the 15th century.

With 276 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Montcey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (332 people were counted in 1881), the population continued to grow steadily from the early 1970s to 1990. Since then, only minor fluctuations have been observed.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montcey was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Colombier to Dampvalley-lès-Colombe. Other road connections exist with Frotey-lès-Vesoul and Comberjon.
