geography

Bresilley is located at an altitude of 198 m above sea level, six kilometers east-southeast of Pesmes and about 29 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, in the valley of the Ognon on the north bank of the river. Bresilley is the southernmost municipality in the Haute-Saône department.

The area of the 3.54 km² municipal area covers a section of the lower Ognon valley. The southern border always runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several turns to the west through an alluvial plain , which has a width of about three kilometers and averages 195 m. It is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards over the valley plain and the terrace of Bresilley (206 m) to the adjacent lowland of the Bois d'Aval . This is drained by the Cassis brook to the Ognon. In the far north the area extends to the plateau near Bard. Here, at 221 m, the highest point in Bresilley is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Bresilley are Bard-lès-Pesmes and Montagney in the north, Vitreux in the east, Ougney and Thervay in the south and Malans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Bresilley belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . In the 12th century, local rule was held by a noble family that took the name of the village. Ecclesiastically, Bresilley belonged to the Montseugny Comedy . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Bresilley is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Val de Pesmes, which comprises 18 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Bresilley was built in the 18th century and has tombstones and a statue of Saint Roch from the 16th century. There is an oak tree in the village, which was probably planted in 1640 and has a trunk circumference of eight meters.

With 188 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Bresilley is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (206 people were counted in 1891), the population has continued to grow steadily since the early 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bresilley was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Gray to Arc-et-Senans . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 11 km away. Other road connections exist with Montagney and Malans.
