Chargey-lès-Gray is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Chargey-lès-Gray is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, five kilometers north of Gray and about 44 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme west of the department, west of the Saône valley , in a slightly elevated position on the edge of the plateau east of the valley low of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes .
The area of the 16.56 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area north of the plain of Gray. From north-west to south-east, the area is crossed by the lowland of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes , which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley floodplain is a maximum of one kilometer wide, averages 195 m and formerly formed a moorland. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau that reaches a height of around 230 m. It is divided by various hollows that open to the Ruisseau des Écoulottes . This plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . Large parts of the plateau are used for agriculture, but there are also larger forest areas. The western boundary runs in the wooded area of the Bois de Lalleau (up to 237 m). In the north, the municipality extends into the forest of the Bois des Fontenelles and in the east in those of the Bois de la Racine and the Bois de la Bouloye . The highest elevation of Chargey-lès-Gray is reached at 250 m on a knoll in the area of the hamlet of La Rente Rouge .
Neighboring municipalities of Chargey-lès-Gray are Oyrières in the north, Montureux-et-Prantigny and Rigny in the east, Arc-lès-Gray and Nantilly in the south and Bouhans-et-Feurg and Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte in the west.
history
Chargey was first mentioned in a document in 1235. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule had been held by the lords of Dampierre since the 13th century. In the 17th century, Chargey was hit several times by wars and plague epidemics. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the beginning of 2008, Chargey-lès-Gray has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 localities .
Attractions
The village church of Chargey-lès-Gray, originally from the 13th century, was largely rebuilt in 1768. The Château-Grillot is a former mansion from the 15th and 16th centuries. The lavoir, which was once used as a wash house and cattle trough, dates from the 19th century. It shows the style of a Roman atrium .

With 690 inhabitants (2007) Chargey-lès-Gray is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (723 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time Chargey-lès-Gray was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses, including a wood processing company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the Gray area.
The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D67 road from Gray to Langres . Through a local bypass, the center is relieved of through traffic. Further road connections exist with Auvet, Rigny and Montureux.
