Mairie (Pusy Castle)

Pusy-et-Épenoux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Pusy-et-Épenoux is located at an altitude of 262 m above sea level, about six kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the Vesoul basin, on a plateau between the Bâtard creeks to the east and Ruisseau de la Vaugine to the west.

The area of the 10.07 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of the Vesoul basin. The central part of the area is occupied by the Pusy plateau, which is an average of 260 m. It slopes slightly to the south and is mainly used for agriculture, but there are also some forest areas, especially the Gros Bois in the southeast. In the far north-west, in the area of the Bois du Chanoi , the highest point of Pusy-et-Épenoux is reached at 294 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments from the lower Jurassic period . The western boundary forms the lowland of the Ruisseau de la Vaugine , which provides drainage to the south to the Durgeon .

To the east, the community area extends into the valley of the Bâtard , another right tributary of the Durgeon. The heights of the Bois la Dame (285 m) east of this valley also belong to Pusy-et-Épenoux.

The double community consists of the village of Pusy (262 m) on the plateau and the hamlet of Épenoux (239 m) on the western edge of the lowland of the Bâtard. Neighboring municipalities of Pusy-et-Épenoux are Bougnon and Auxon in the north, Villeparois in the east, Coulevon and Vesoul in the south and Pusey and Charmoille in the west.

history

Remains from Roman times indicate a very early settlement of the place. In the Middle Ages, Pusy belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rulership was held first by the Viscount of Vesoul, later by the Lords of Faucogney. In the following, Pusy shared the fate of the neighboring municipality of Pusey. In the 16th and 17th centuries the place suffered from military campaigns and looting several times: In 1569 the church was devastated by troops of Duke Wolfgang von Pfalz-Zweibrücken . In 1595 the village was affected by the soldiers under Tremblecourt. During the Thirty Years War, Pusy was burned. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1807 when Épenoux (1806: 97 inhabitants) merged with Pusy. Today, Pusy-et-Épenoux is a member of the 19 localities community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul .

Attractions

The Saint-Martin church was rebuilt in the 19th century, with the ogival chancel of the previous building (16th century) being included. It has remarkable furnishings , including the richly carved high altar (17th century), several side altars (17th / 18th century), paneling in the Louis XIV style and various paintings. There is a cross from the 18th century in the cemetery.

The 18th century castle of Pusy has been owned by the municipality since 1991 and today houses the municipal administration. A hotel is housed in the Château d'Épenoux.

With 552 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Pusy-et-Épenoux is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (376 people were still counted in 1891), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Pusy-et-Épenoux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares near a departmental road that leads from Vesoul to Conflans-sur-Lanterne . Further road connections exist with Pusey and Bougnon.
