Chaux-lès-Port is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chaux-lès-Port is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, three kilometers north of Port-sur-Saône and about 14 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Saône valley .

The area of ​​the 4.15 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of ​​the upper Saône valley. The western border always runs along the Saône, which here draws an arc extending to the west. The Saône's alluvial lowland averages 210 m and is approximately one kilometer wide. The river has been developed into a waterway. Its banks are mostly flat, but rocks with caves protrude from the steep slopes .

From the course of the river, the community area extends eastward over the valley floodplain and a slowly rising slope to the adjacent plateau, which consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marly and chalky sediments from the middle Jurassic period . At 277 m, the highest point of Chaux-lès-Port is reached in the far east. The area shows a loose structure of arable and meadow land as well as forest areas.

Neighboring municipalities of Chaux-lès-Port are Conflandey and Amoncourt in the north, Villers-sur-Port in the east and Port-sur-Saône in the south and west.

history

The municipality of Chaux-lès-Port was settled very early. In the cave Grande-Baume traces of the presence of the people were in the Neolithic and the Bronze Age on the La Tene period discovered to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Chaux-lès-Port belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Agnan church originally dates from 1505 but was extensively restored in 1764. It has an image of the Madonna from the 17th century as well as remarkable furniture and statuettes.

With 159 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chaux-lès-Port is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (230 people were counted in 1891), only relatively small fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chaux-lès-Port was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Vesoul.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Baulay . Another road connection is with Villers-sur-Port. The railway line from Vesoul to Langres, opened in 1858, runs through the municipality . The nearest train station is in Port-sur-Saône.
