Contréglise is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Contréglise is located at an altitude of 245 m above sea level, eight kilometers northwest of Faverney and about 24 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on a hill between the basins of Ruisseau de Révillon in the west and Superbe in the east.

The area of the 9.61 km² municipality covers a section in the gently undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . From north to south the area is crossed by the alluvial lowland of the Ruisseau de Révillon , which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley level is on average 235 m and has a width of about one kilometer. The valley is flanked on both sides by plateaus that are around 260 m. To the west is the height of La Vignotte (281 m), to the east is the Contréglise plateau. Agricultural use prevails here.

The plateaus rise gradually to the north. The municipal area extends into the wooded headwaters of the Ruisseau de Révillon with the heights of Mont aux Pies and Grand Bois . At 348 m, the highest point in Contréglise is reached in the Grand Bois. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). In some places shell limestone from the Triassic comes to light.

Neighboring municipalities of Contréglise are Saponcourt and Polaincourt-et-Clairefontaine in the north, Senoncourt in the east, Amance and Buffignécourt in the south and Venisey in the west.

history

Remains of a burial ground from the Merovingian period bear witness to an early settlement of the area. Contréglise was first mentioned in a document in 1154 as Contereglisia . The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Gundhar and the Latin word ecclesia (church). In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Contréglise formed its own small rule. During the Thirty Years' War the place was badly affected. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. On April 23, 1789, before the French Revolution actually began , villagers stormed the local castle. Today Contréglise is a member of the community association Communauté de communes Agir Ensemble, which comprises 13 villages .

Attractions

The Contréglise church was rebuilt in the 19th century; only sparse remains of the previous building from the 12th century are left. The old town center is characterized by various houses from the 16th to 18th centuries, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône, including a house with a square tower. The castle dates from the 18th century.

With 118 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Contréglise is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (377 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Contréglise is still a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Amance to Corre . Further road connections exist with Venisey and Buffignécourt.
