La Demie is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Demie is located at an altitude of 315 m above sea level, about four kilometers south of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on a slope exposed to the southeast in the hilly landscape that extends between the river valleys of Saône in the northwest and Ognon in the southeast.

The area of the 6.26 km² municipal area includes a section in the hilly area south of Vesoul. The central part of the area is occupied by a hollow, which is an average of 280 m. It has a width of about 1.5 kilometers and opens to the northeast to the valley of the Colombine . Agricultural use predominates here. From the Mulde the municipal area extends to the northwest over the slope of La Demie to the adjacent heights: Bois du Tilleul in the north, Croix de Cassini (at 447 m the highest elevation of La Demie) in the northwest and Bois des Planchettes in the west. The area consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marly and calcareous layers from the middle Jurassic period . There are no surface rivers in the entire municipal area because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

The neighboring communities of La Demie are Navenne in the north, Quincey in the east, Neurey-lès-la-Demie and Vallerois-Lorioz in the south and Échenoz-la-Méline in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality was already settled in prehistoric times. La Demie is mentioned for the first time in 1073. At that time there were three villages, La Demie-la-Côte , La Demie-la-Millotte and La Demie , the only one that still exists today. In the Middle Ages, La Demie belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today La Demie is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Chanois, which comprises six localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Rémy church shows various styles: the Gothic choir dates from the 16th century, the nave was rebuilt in the 18th century, and the portal is in the flamboyant style. It has remarkable furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries, in particular the carved wooden pulpit, the richly carved main altar, paintings and statues of Saints Anthony and Remigius as well as tombstones.

There is a calvary (18th century) in the cemetery . The Way of the Cross on the road to Navenne was built in the 17th century.

With 142 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), La Demie is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (160 people were still counted in 1881), after a temporary trend reversal, a population decline has been recorded again since 1982.

Economy and Infrastructure

La Demie is still today a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns of the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Quincey to Vallerois-Lorioz. There are other road connections with Navenne and Neurey-lès-la-Demie.
