Cognières is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cognières is located at an altitude of 268 m above sea level, about 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends on a plateau between the valley of the Ognon in the southeast and the valley low of the Ruisseau de Bouhans in the west, on the edge of the wooded heights of the Bois du Petit Pas .

The area of the 3.93 km² large municipal area comprises a section in the area of the middle Ognon valley. However, the area does not extend to the course of the river, but only to the steep slope of a wide meander arch of the Ognon extending to the northwest. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which consists of limestone layers from the Upper Jurassic period and averages 280 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The Ruisseau de Bouhans , which flows in a valley basin that is sunk into the plateau, provides drainage to the south to the Ognon . To the west, the municipality extends into the Bois de Bouhans , to the north into the Bois du Petit Pas . Here, at 321 m, the highest point in Cognières is reached.

Neighboring communities of Cognières are Dampierre-sur-Linotte in the north, Thieffrans in the east, Montagney-Servigney in the south and Bouhans-lès-Montbozon in the west.

history

The municipality of Cognières was already settled in the Neolithic. The village is mentioned in a document in 1324. As early as the 12th century there was a church here, which was subordinate to the monastery of Baume-les-Dames . In the Middle Ages, Cognières belonged to the county of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. With the opening of the railway line from Besançon to Lure at the end of the 19th century, the place was connected to the French railway network. Today, however, the line is closed. Since 2000, Cognières has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, comprising 21 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Cognières was rebuilt in the 18th century. The rich furnishings include a crucifix from the 16th century, as well as the altar and pulpit from the 18th century.

The basin of the Ruisseau de Bouhans is spanned by the viaduct of the former railway line.

With 92 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Cognières is one of the smallest communes in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (174 people were still counted in 1906), only relatively small fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cognières was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Montbozon to Esprels . Further road connections exist with Rougemont and Presle.
