View of the village

Rupt-sur-Saône is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Rupt-sur-Saône is located at an altitude of 207 m above sea level, four kilometers southwest of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about 16 kilometers west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, on the northern edge of the Saône valley opposite Chantes , at the entrance of the Rupt de Vaux brook into the broad valley, on the southern edge of the forest heights of the Bois de Confracourt .

The area of the 10.24 km² municipal area includes a section of the central Saône valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Saône, which flows here with large loops through a wide alluvial lowland to the southwest. The flood plain averages 202 m and has a width of around two kilometers. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the loops being cut off by side channels.

From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floodplain and a roughly 30 m high steep slope onto the adjacent plateau. This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . It is subdivided by the valley cut of the Rupt de Vaux and its side valleys. The fertile soils of the valley and plateau are mainly used for agriculture. Further to the north, the community soil extends into an extensive forest area. At 341 m, the highest point in Rupt-sur-Saône is reached on a hill in the Bois du Prince de Bauffremont .

Neighboring municipalities of Rupt-sur-Saône are Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin in the north, Ovanches in the east, Chantes and Fédry in the south and Vy-lès-Rupt and Confracourt in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Rupt-sur-Saône was already populated in Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Rupt belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Local rule had been held by the Lords of Pesmes from the 12th century , who built a mansion here. At the beginning of the 13th century, the noble family ruling here took the name Rupt. Together with Franche-Comté , Rupt finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Until his death under the guillotine in 1793, Rupt was owned by Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d'Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet . To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Rupt was officially renamed Rupt-sur-Saône in 1878. Today Rupt-sur-Saône is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 localities .

Attractions

The village church was built in the 18th century and has a rich interior . There is a calvary in front of the church . Nearby is the mausoleum of the Count of Orsay, who was the owner of the castle. A wayside cross is dated to 1603.

Also worth seeing is the Fontaine au Lion with a large lion statue.

The castle, which was built in the 19th century on the site of the medieval manor, rises on the hill to the west of the village. The mighty round keep from the 12th century and a building from the 16th century have been preserved from the former construction.

With 119 inhabitants (2004), Rupt-sur-Saône is one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly during the 20th century (440 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Rupt-sur-Saône was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The water power of the village stream was previously used to operate several mills. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Soing to Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin. Other road connections exist with Chantes and Ovanches.
