Purgerot is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Purgerot is located at an altitude of 255 m above sea level, five kilometers northwest of Port-sur-Saône and about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in a basin of the Ruisseau du Pont des Creux open to the east, west of the Saône valley , on the edge of the heights of the Bois de Chargey.
The area of the 14.11 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the upper Saône valley. The central part of the area is taken up by the basin of the Ruisseau du Pont des Creux , which is an average of 240 m. The basin has a width of one kilometer and a length of two kilometers and is drained by the stream to the east to the Saône. To the east, the community area extends into the broad alluvial valley of the Saône (located at an average of 215 m). Agricultural use prevails here.
The Purgerot basin is framed on three sides by the foothills of the Combeaufontaine plateau. In the north is the wooded ledge of the Grand Lien (327 m), in the south the summit of the Bois de Chargey , on which the highest elevation of Purgerot is reached at 363 m. To the west and south-west, the community soil extends to the wooded plateau of the Grand Bois (325 m) and into the headwaters of the Ruisseau de l'Étang near Arbecey. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the heights consist of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period , while in the eastern and northern parts of the municipality an alternating layer of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments of the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ) emerges.
The Port d'Atelier settlement (220 m) on the western bank of the Saône belongs to Purgerot . Neighboring municipalities of Purgerot are Aboncourt-Gesincourt , Fouchécourt and Baulay in the north, Faverney and Conflandey in the east, Chargey-lès-Port in the south and Arbecey in the west.
history
Remains from the Gallo-Roman period indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages Purgerot belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of Bailliage d'Amont . In 1204, the village came into the possession of the Cherlieu Monastery through a donation . The Saint-Jean-de-Réomé chapel has been mentioned since 1232. In 1697 it became the property of Morey Monastery. As early as 1196, the settlement of Port-d'Atelier on the Saône was first mentioned as a transshipment point for wood. Together with Franche-Comté , Purgerot finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1972 Purgerot merged with the neighboring municipality of Arbecey to form the dual municipality of Purgerot-Arbecey. Only five years later, both communities regained their independence in 1977. Today Purgerot is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes de la Saône Jolie, which comprises 16 villages .
Attractions
The Saint-Martin church shows a mixture of different styles. The oldest part is the Romanesque bell tower, the choir and side chapels in Gothic Flamboyant style date from the 15th century, while the nave was rebuilt in the 17th century and redesigned in the 19th century. The furnishings include a richly carved wooden altar (17th century), paintings and statues from the 17th century.
The covered lavoir , which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, was built in 1847. Only a few remains of a former mansion are visible. In Port d'Atelier there is a chapel, restored in 1931, which houses a statue of the Madonna from the 16th century.

With 342 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Purgerot is one of the smaller communes in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century, the population decreased continuously (in 1881 there were still 709 people).
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Purgerot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Vesoul.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares near a departmental road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Jussey . Further road connections exist with Combeaufontaine and Faverney.
