Mairie from Fondremand

Fondremand is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fondremand is located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, 19 kilometers southwest of Vesoul and about 27 kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, in the hill country that extends between the Saône basin and the river valley of the Ognon , in the valley of the Romaine .

The area of the 16.43 km² municipality covers a section of the hilly landscape southeast of the Saône basin. From southeast to northwest the area is crossed by a valley cut. The Romaine rises in the village, providing drainage to the Saône, while the valley basins south of Fondremand do not show any surface running water.

The valley is sunk into the surrounding hilly landscape, which geologically consists of calcareous and sandy-marly layers of the middle and upper Jurassic period . The hills are predominantly forest-covered, larger areas with arable and meadow land are only available in the hollow areas. To the south-west, the municipal soil extends over the heights of Bois de la Forêt (381 m) and Bois de Verbuzon (360 m) to the headwaters of the Tounolle , a right tributary of the Ognon. The forest-covered heights of Mailley with Bois de la Côte , Les Foulnières and Bois des Rêpes extend north-east of the Romaine basin . At 437 m, the highest point in Fondremand is reached in the Bois de la Côte. Apart from the Romaine there are no overground streams because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

The hamlet of Les Roselières (290 m) in the headwaters of the Tounolle belongs to Fondremand. Neighboring communities of Fondremand are Maizières and Mailley-et-Chazelot in the north, Hyet in the east, Trésilley , Montarlot-lès-Rioz and Cordonnet in the south, and Villers-Bouton and Recologne-lès-Rioz in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman traffic route and a burial ground from the Merovingian period (6th century) indicate an early settlement of the municipality. The Fondremand settlement was probably built in the 11th century. It quickly developed into a church and fortified castle areas. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . In 1385, Fondremand came into the possession of the lords of Neuchâtel and for a long time it was the center of a barony. In the 17th century, the village was repeatedly affected by wars and plague epidemics. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Fondremand is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

Attractions

Church Nativité-de-Notre-Dame

Fondremand has retained its appearance in the style of a characteristic Franche-Comté village and has been awarded the “Petite Cité Comtoise de Caractère” label. Numerous town houses date from the 15th to 18th centuries and are equipped with turrets, stair towers, coats of arms and ornate masonry, including the Hôtel Maublanc (late 14th century, restored in 1912) in the late Gothic style and the Maison Naudon in the Renaissance style .

One of the oldest church buildings in the Haute-Saône that has not changed much is the church of Fondremand, which was built between the 11th and 13th centuries. While the tower is in Romanesque style, Romanesque and Gothic style elements are combined in the nave . The rich furnishings include furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries and numerous statues (16th to 18th centuries).

The castle, too, was originally built in the 12th century. The mighty Romanesque donjon, which houses a museum about local history, has been preserved from this period. The other castle buildings date from the 16th to 18th centuries. The donjon overlooks the contained source of the Romaine. The round basin originally served as a cattle trough and wash basin. It was provided with a pavilion in neoclassical style in 1831 . Other sights include a former oil mill.

With 198 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Fondremand is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (371 people were counted in 1881), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fondremand was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and trade and commerce. Today there are various local small businesses. The hospitality industry and tourist facilities also contribute to the income of the village population. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The Journées Artisanales et Artistiques are held every year in July.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Grandvelle to Rioz . Further road connections exist with Recologne-lès-Rioz, Oiselay-et-Grachaux and Hyet.
