Velloreille-lès-Choye is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Velloreille-lès-Choye is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, twelve kilometers east-southeast of Gray and about 28 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the basin of the Saône , northwest of the heights of the Monts de Gy .

The area of ​​the 4.13 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The predominantly flat area, which averages 230 m, is made up of sediments that come from the Tertiary and Cretaceous periods . The area is drained to the Colombine , a left tributary of the Morte . The fertile soils are mainly used for agriculture. To the west, the municipality extends into the forest of the Bois de Grilley and into the lowlands of the Tenise. At 264 m, the highest point of Velloreille-lès-Choye is reached on the hill of Mont de Velloreille south of the village.

Neighboring communities of Velloreille-lès-Choye are Villefrancon in the north, Choye in the east, Cugney in the south and Onay and Velesmes-Échevanne in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Velloreille belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Saint-Loup held local rule. In the 16th century, Velloreille temporarily formed an independent rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Velloreille-lès-Choye is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Velloreille-lès-Choye was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. It houses a statue of the Madonna from the 18th century and other statues from the 17th century.

With 78 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Velloreille-lès-Choye is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (162 people were still counted in 1886), slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Velloreille-lès-Choye was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D474, which leads from Gray to Vesoul . Other road connections exist with Choye and Cugney.
