Achey is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Achey is located at an altitude of 233 m above sea level, 15 kilometers north of Gray and about 50 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the plateau landscape north-west of the Saône Valley , on a slope sloping slightly to the south above the valley of the Salon River .
The area of the 7.05 km² municipal area covers a section in the area of the plateau north of the Saône valley. From west to east the area is crossed by the valley low of the Salon, which provides drainage to the Saône. The flood plain averages 210 m and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau that reaches an average height of 250 m. This plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . Agricultural use is predominant in the valley and on the plateau. In the south, the municipal soil extends into the Bois d'Écot (up to 250 m). To the north, the area extends over the plateaus of Les Chaillots and Grand Mouéron. The plateau is subdivided by a dry valley system (Combe du Ru, Grandes Combes), which is part of the salon's catchment area. At 258 m, the highest point in Achey is reached on a hill east of the Grandes Combes.
Achey's neighboring communities are Courtesoult-et-Gatey in the north, Delain in the east, Montot in the south and Framont in the west.
history
The municipality of Achey was settled very early. Ceramic fragments from the Gallo-Roman period and a sarcophagus from the Merovingian period were found. Achey is mentioned as Ache , Aiche , Aichey , Acheium, and Acheyo . The place was probably destroyed by the Normans as early as 880. In the Middle Ages, Achey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The noble family von Achey has been documented since 1137, but the Theuley monastery also had property and rights in the place. It maintained a forge until 1772. Together with Franche-Comté, the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Achey is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .
Attractions
The Saint-Martin church shows different styles. The Gothic choir from the 14th century forms the oldest part, it contains frescoes from the 15th century. The nave and bell tower in the imperial style date from the 18th century. In the center of the village there is a calvaire and a lavoir from the 19th century that once served as a wash house and cattle trough. Only ruins are left of the former manor house.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Dampierre-sur-Salon to Champlitte . Other road connections exist with Oyrières and Courtesoult.
