Pennesières is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Pennesières is located at an altitude of 285 m above sea level, seven kilometers north-northeast of Rioz and about 16 kilometers south of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, on the western edge of a wide valley basin, between the heights of the Grand Bois de Mailley in the west and the Bois Lajus in the east.

The area of the 9.07 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is covered in a north-south direction by a valley basin that has a width of about one kilometer. Except for a short section, it does not show any surface watercourse because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil, but topographically it belongs to the catchment area of the Quenoche. In the northeast, the hollow is connected to the Authoison basin. To the east of the valley basin, the communal soil extends to the height of Chatey (390 m), which is part of the Bois Lajus forest .

To the west, the hollow is flanked by the heights of Pennesières and Bois de Chaillot . In between lies the Courboux valley. In the far west the community area extends to the hills of the Grand Bois de Mailley , on which the highest point of Pennesières is reached at 411 m. From a geological point of view, the heights consist of an alternation of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period , while layers of the middle Jurassic period emerge in the Grand Bois de Mailley. There are several karst phenomena in the area, including the Gouffre de la Font, a grotto near Courboux.

The following settlements belong to Pennesières:

  • Courboux (295 m), a village in a side valley on the edge of the Bois de Chaillot
  • Les Laverottes (300 m), hamlet on the eastern edge of the Bois de Chaillot on the main road N57

Neighboring municipalities of Pennesières are Le Magnoray and Échenoz-le-Sec in the north, Authoison in the east, Quenoche and Hyet in the south and Mailley-et-Chazelot in the west.

history

The municipal area of Pennesières was already settled in prehistoric times, as indicated by graves from the Neolithic and two dolmens . A burial ground is also known from the Merovingian period . In the Middle Ages Pennesières belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The lords of Vellefaux held local rule over the village . Together with Franche-Comté , Pennesières finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1808 when the previously independent Courboux (1806: 207 inhabitants) merged with Pennesières. Today the village is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

Economy and Infrastructure

Pennesières was a village that was dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N57, which leads from Besançon to Vesoul. Other road connections exist with Authoison and Chazelot.
