TonbergUrtod is the sixth album by the German metal band Totenmond and was released in 2005 via Massacre Records .

Emergence

The album was recorded in 2005 just under a year after the release of the previous work “ Unter Bones ” in the “House of Music” studio in Winterbach together with Achim Köhler and his assistant Daniel Langer. About the creation process and the differences to the predecessor, singer and guitarist Pazzer said in an interview that the differences between the two works were in the sound, because the band had more time in the studio. In addition, the band did not want a sequel to the “Under Bones” album, because all of the band's albums had sounded different so far. Furthermore, all songs are said to have been created by working out in the rehearsal room, whereby the music was created first and then the lyrics, only the song "Angstbeisser" was an exception. In another interview, Pazzer said that he “had [made] from the beginning not to repeat ourselves. [...] First and foremost, I want to be uncomfortable and angular. "

The album's release date was June 27, 2005. It was released exclusively on CD as a jewelcase and digipack edition.

The cover shows a brown drawing of soldiers with spiked hats who are currently engaged in combat, in the first row a soldier is about to fall to the ground. In the midst of the soldiers there is a tricolor that looks similar to the French one. In the booklet there are only two pictures with a skeleton. As on the predecessor, there is also a “Against Nazis!” Logo printed on the CD cover.

Greetings go to punk bands like Fleeing Storms or Third Choice . Under the motto “No thanks goes to”, Pazzer names the “metal scene”, which he describes as a “blinders revolt”, as is Pope John Paul II, who died in the same year, with the sentence “that it is so took a long time ”wrote. Pazzer's bandmate Senf also makes a similar statement by having "... rejoice, a Pope has died for me" written into the booklet.

With regard to the rejection of the metal scene, Pazzer became more specific in an interview. He called the scene "trend-encrusted" and stated that "especially in the metal sector, everyone is pretty stuffy and pays close attention to fashion or trends."

Style and content

Like the releases before TonbergUrtod , the album cannot be classified into a clearly delimited genre, remarked David Gregori from the website metal.de, “Categorization fetishists [would] despair as always” and the album unifies “Thrash, Hardcore, Punk, Death” Metal and even rare black salsify. ”Other authors emphasize the influences from the Thrash and Doom areas, which made up“ the two focal points of their sound ”, but which in the individual songs are differently strong and“ more clearly separated than before [t] ”, so that“ Wurmerbarmend ”or“ In the black circle ”sound more like Thrash, while“ Angstbeisser ”or“ Heidenfeuer ”sound more Doom-heavy. Moritz Krüger from metal1.info says that “there is also one or the other Death Metal element” in the style of the band.

Totenmond called the advertising printed in magazines by the record company "Germany's best metal core band". In an interview with the webzine Powermetal.de , Pazzer replied to the question of what he thought of the band's classification in this genre:

“First of all, it comes from the record company or from people who don't know what to do with us, even if, strangely, they always say so, and secondly, I don't give a damn about these drawers. I just ask myself: What is Metalcore anyway? Punk with Metal or the other way around? Were then Carnivore , SOD or DRI already metalcore, or what? Is this a movement that has only emerged in recent years? I don't know my way around. "

- Pazzer

In another interview, Pazzer found that such a process as the mention of the genre term “Metalcore” in the record company's band information was “stuff we can't do anything with. That comes exclusively from those who want to sell this "product" Totenmond. ”Furthermore, he does not like to be“ lumped together with bands that I find tasteless to be meaningless ”.

About the lyrics, Pazzer said that the album reflected "[...] the darkest side of a person". According to interpretations of individual texts, “Heroin” is about drugs , while “TonbergUrtod - Kastrazion” and “Blutost” address the Holocaust and the Third Reich . Pazzer himself commented jokingly that “Blutost” was about the “Russian Mafia” and “Heidenfeuer” about his boy scout days, but immediately afterwards called it a taboo for him to talk about his texts. He doesn't care and is no longer interested in "what people do with my texts in relation to their meaning."

reception

Basically, the album was rated extremely positively by most of the critics, but there were a few exceptions that described the album as "loud, dirty, well-produced and terribly boring", since the "allegedly provocative lyrics [...] are no longer a protestor these days behind the stove in front of [fetch] ”and there are still no melodies.

In the overall work of the band, the album was partially classified in such a way that it surpassed the more experimentally conceived previous album "Unter Bones" and again linked to previous performances:

“The last Totenmond work“ Unter Bones ”was okay, but compared to its grandiose predecessors such as“ Reich in Rost ”it was just a rough, rumbling and uninspired breeze. "TonbergUrtod" finally shows the Backnang ulcer from its ugliest and incredibly uncompromising side, so loved by the fans. "

- David Gregori

“In contrast to the previous album“ Unter Bones ”, which was good but too bulky and“ nerve-wracking ”,“ TonbergUrtod ”sounds more accessible and more like a piece."

- Andreas Stappert

Michael Monz stated in his review in the Metal Observer that the band had become more complex and creative in terms of guitar riffs , drum characters and lyrics, but saw deficits in the atmospheric design of the songs compared to previous albums:

“The only thing I personally miss is the gloomy of their music, that slightly strange feeling that was so predominantly caused by“ Lichtbringer ”and“ Reich in Rost ”. "TonbergUrtod" slides down a bit smoother, [...] but offers less rough edges or ugly sides than one might have hoped. "

- Michael Monz

Kalle Stille emphasized the intensity of the work in Ox magazine :

“TonbergUrtod” is a bit coarser than its predecessor, filled with subtle nuances that make the work even denser in the places where there was hardly any air to breathe anyway. The almighty riff rules here, not the melody or delicate craftsmanship on the strings. The whole spectrum is flared, from the tough steam roller sound to real smashers that bring every pit to a boil. [...] Music like a ten kilo hammer that reshapes the top of your skull. Guitar amplifiers and distortions were built for such a sound! "
