SOD (short for Stormtroopers of Death ) is a thrash metal - band from the United States, founded the 1984th It consisted of Scott Ian , Danny Lilker , Billy Milano and Charlie Benante from members of the bands Anthrax and Nuclear Assault and had more of the character of a side project.

Band history

The band was planned as a fun project for the anthrax members Ian, Benante and their ex-member Lilker with the former anthrax roadie Milano. The 1985 debut album, Speak English or Die , became a cult album and had a major impact on many of the heavier bands. In addition, it represents one of the first crossover connections of the styles Hardcore Punk and Metal , which were previously regarded as incompatible with each other . The lyrics on this album, written by Billy Milano, showed a peculiar sarcastic humor, but were also criticized for allegedly xenophobic tendencies. The theme song called for illegal immigrants to adapt to US culture. On the other hand, the lyrics of Fuck the Middle East demonstrated Milano's sarcastic approach to political issues by pleading for the total obliteration of the entire Middle East in favor of Egypt and Israel. The other songs were written in a similar way and underlined the rather fun band concept with their humor ( Milk , Hey Gordy ).

The live album Live at Budokan from 1992 underpinned this impression. Before and after this live album, the band members returned to their main bands Anthrax (Benante and Ian), MOD (Milano) and Nuclear Assault (Lilker). It was not until 1999 that the band got back together and released Bigger Than The Devil , which closely related to its predecessor in terms of text and music. This album used an artwork parody of Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast and was extremely successful. As a result, SOD remained active until 2003 and released an EP with the songs Seasoning the Obese and Raise Your Sword , which is only available as a limited color record, as well as the two DVDs Kill Yourself - The Movie and Speak English or Live . The Kill Yourself DVD was a documentary about the band, Speak English or Live documented the concert of 1992, which was also recorded on Live at Budokan , expanded with a lot of "behind-the-scenes" material.

In 2003 the band broke again: Lilker and Milano go their own way, Benante and Ian are full-time at Anthrax again. At the moment the band lives on the myth that they only exist briefly, but then loudly and in the spotlight.

In 2005 the 20 Years of Dysfunction DVD was released. This contains a number of concert recordings and mini-concerts, and the bonus CD Pussywhipped also includes a “booted bootleg” (original sound) from an early concert. In 2007 another CD was released with Rise of the Infidels with a concert recording from 1999. The four musicians gave the concert in Seattle. The last two releases were made by Megaforce, so there is no material from Bigger Than the Devil (SPV).

Billy Milano and his band MOD have been accused of alleged racist and nationalist tendencies in recent years, especially since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
