Charlie Benante (born November 27, 1962 in New York City ) is an American musician and drummer for the thrash metal band Anthrax . In addition to drums, he plays guitar and keyboard and works as a music producer . Benante is considered to be one of the fathers of blastbeat , a drum technique that is played very quickly.

Benante comes from a middle-class American family, his mother and grandfather played the guitar. He has two older sisters. Benante was supposed to start playing drums at the age of five. After he was rejected by various music schools because of his age, a jazz drummer gave him private lessons after an audition . A little later, Benante's father died. After a few years of teaching, he took over the drums in a neighborhood girls' band after the original drummer left college . When Benante was 14, Frank Bello , the son of his older sister Rose, moved in with his family. Both jammed together and it was Benante who got Bello to switch from guitar to bass.

Charlie Benante made his first live appearances at the age of 15 as a member of a cover band that had up to four appearances in the evening and played pieces by The Who or The Cars . Playing cover versions did not satisfy Benante and he left the band to begin training at an art school. In May 1983 he became the drummer for Anthrax . Still with little part in the songwriting for their debut Fistful of Metal , he was one of the main songwriters of the band from the 1985 album Spreading the Disease . In addition to his commitment to Anthrax, in April 1985 he was one of the founders of the SOD project , which is one of the pioneers of metalcore . With SOD, the musicians who originally came from metal wanted to implement their idea of ​​how hardcore punk should sound in their opinion.

In addition to his membership in Anthrax and SOD, Benante works as a session musician and music producer . For the hard rock band Heavy the Fall from Chicago he played the drums for the 2007 EP , which he also produced. Since 2008 he has also appeared as a live drummer at various concerts of the band. The end of 2009 it was announced that he, the debut album of Heavy the Fall produce and will record the drum parts.

Benante is married with a daughter and a stepson . The family lives in the US state of Illinois . He is a supporter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence , which campaigns against the misuse of firearms. The passionate coffee drinker offered his own line of coffee products and hand-signed mugs in 2008 via the online shop of Dave Mustaine's wife .
